Rutherford Ladies v Darlington Spraire Ladies

Cracking opening game of the new season and a fabulous display of football by the ladies team today travelling away to Darlington with a few key players missing.

The game started well for us seeming to gain the upper hand and look strong from the first whistle. The girls battled hard playing some terrific football and creating some brilliant goal scoring opportunities. We took the lead in the 28th minute of play with a tremendous strike from Rebecca. The squad worked hard for the second goal attacking in numbers but half time came before we could convert our chances.

The second half seen Darlington come at us strong and score two goals within the first 15 minutes taking the lead away from us.

The team reacted positively to this and massively picked up the pace. They began to take charge of the game, retaining most possession and creating some brilliant attacking play. We created a good few chances and won numerous corners. This is where our equalizing goal came from. It was Becca who sent in a superb corner ball which fell towards the penalty spot. There was a slight scramble in the box but Leah worked hard and managed to slip the ball over the line. The team was back in the game.

The remaining time on the pitch saw chances at both end with Rutherford looking more likely to score and retaining most of the possession. Unfortunately time ran out and the game ended 2-2.

Player of the match today was awarded to centre half Katherine for her fantastic and strong performance from start to finish.

A superb team performance by every single player. A huge point for the table and a great opening to the new season. Well done ladies.... very proud !!!
