Today we travelled away to face Lumley Ladies in our return league fixture. The start wasn't the best as the referee got lost which delayed our kick off time from 2.00pm to 2.25pm. The starting whistle finally blew and a great battle was seen between the two teams. Lumley were strong and physical and with the youth around their team very pacey all over the pitch. They had an excellent goal keeper who kept us out so many times i lost count as well as a fast and tough centre forward. We struggled with this throughout the first half as we like to play football down on the ground passing and moving in triangles but with the ball constantly going over the top of us to feed their centre half we were unable to do this.
The first half seen no goals scored from either team with us having the most chances so a well earned rest and a good team talk was needed for us to refresh for the second half.
The second half saw a completely different performance from the ladies really pressuring our opponents from the off. We scored our first goal of the game within 8 minutes of play. It was new signing Murray who created the goal playing a tremendous ball through to striking partner Scott who finished sublimely. This seemed to be the boost we needed and the momemtum kept up. Within another 8 minutes of play winger Fairbairn had a great effort at goal which was deflected off the goal line by an opposing defender. It was full back Rerrie who reacted, getting a hold of the rebound ball and firing straight past the Lumley Keeper. This goal seemed to really drop our opponents heads and we went on to score another 4 excellent finishes from Fairbairn, Scott, Murray and Solomon.
Player of the match today was awarded to Stubbs for her excellent performance in midfield for the entire game. She battled hard and won almost every ball causing a massive headache for our opponents.
Overall, a slow start to the game but what a second half performance by the whole team. Well done Ladies.
