Today the team travelled away to Darlington FC Women in the league. The two teams were sitting a point apart in the league so today was sure to be competitive game.
The first half didn't start well for us seeing us struggle to get in the rhythm of the game and allowing Darlington to score after only 1 minute of play. This gave us the kick up the behinds we needed, and we netted the equaliser in the 3rd minute of play. It was from some great attacking play as a team seeing the ball fall to winger Shiv who played it into the box where central midfielder Michelle raised in and sent the ball crashing past the Darlington Keeper.
The game began to get very competitive and physical between the two teams with chances at both ends. In the 20th minute of play a ball was played in the air which was met by stand in captain Mel's feet where she took a perfect touch and played a superb ball through to striker Jades feet. Jade was extremely composed on the ball and struck it with her left foot seeing it fly into the top left corner of the goal. A superb effort from the pair.
Darlington worked hard pressuring us for the equaliser which came in the 30th minute of play seeing us enter the half break with a 2-2 draw.
The second half saw a far better start for us seeing the ball rarely leave our opponents half. A brilliant effort by Hannah was saw in the 62nd minute but she was fouled and brought to the floor. A penalty was awarded. Jade stepped up to take the penalty aiming it towards the left of the goal, the Darlington keeper pulled off a great save seeing her palm the ball away. Midfielder Michelle picked up the rebound ball and struck it towards the goal seeing it go just over the cross bar.
We continued to attack at Darlington's goal but with no reward, they played the ball over the top a lot seeing them create a few chances from this on the counter. In the 73rd minute of goal a Darlington player intercepted the ball from our goal kick and netted the teams third and final goal of the game. With less than 15 minutes of play remaining the team dug deep and worked hard as a team to get the much needed and deserved equaliser. This finally came in the 85th minute seeing striker Carla received the ball at her feet taking a great touch and playing it through to striker Hannahs feet where she drove the ball into the box striking it across the keeper and into the bottom left-hand corner of the game. A brilliant goal giving the team a well-earned point against a strong Darlington team.
Overall, a good team performance where all of the team dug deep and worked hard for each other. A performance to be proud of especially with so many big players missing including our goalkeeper and captain.
Player of the match today was awarded to Mel for her brilliant performance from start to finish seeing her dominate the midfield. She was extremely unlucky to have not made the score sheet on a few occasions. Mel drove the team well as she took the captain band in Robbo's absence and was a constant headache for our oppositions. Well done, Mel.
We now prepare for CLS Amazons at home next week in our final game before the christmas break!
