Today we played Chester Le Street Development Ladies away from home. The side were current league title contenders.
A poor start to the game by us saw Chester net their first goal of the game in the 5th minute of play. The team reacted well to this equalising the score line less than two minutes later. It was a great ball forward into the box from midfield Kirsty finding striker Mel’s feet. Mel was facing away from goal, making a great turn with the ball as well as losing her defender seeing her slot the ball across the keeper and into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.
The wind was strong today and in the first half in Chester’s favour which they used well to their advantage. This helped them take the lead again on the 19th minute of play. The remainder of the half saw some sloppy football played by us which allowed Chester to be on top of the game. They netted their 3rd goal of the game just before half time giving them a 3-1 lead as they entered the break.
The second half was a much better performance by us and made for a good watch between the two sides. We attacked more and created more chances at our opponents goal. The Chester keeper swept very well which affected our play in the final third of the pitch.
In the 78th minute of play we attacked as a team seeing a Chester defender handball the ball in the box and a penalty awarded. Striker Alex stepped up to take it sending the ball crashing into the back of the net.
This spurred the team on working hard to find the equaliser but unfortunately without any reward. A challenge from the keeper on a Chester forward resulted in a penalty awarded against us in the 85th minute. Our keeper Charlie pulled off a superb save and the game ended 3-2 to Chester.
Overall a poor performance by the side seeing a lot of wrong decision making and not enough team work. We learn from this and move on to the next game.
Player of the match today was awarded to captain Steph for her excellent work rate and effort for the entire 90 minutes. Well done skipper!
