Today we played away from home against Chester Le Street Amazons who were currently sitting 1st place in the league. The game was on their 3G pitch which is tiny suiting their style of play but not ours.
It was a good battle between the two sides seeing the extreme winds spoil large parts of the game.
Chester scored on the 40th minute of play with a strike on the edge of the box which went crashing into the top right corner of the goal. This gave them the upper hand as we entered the half time break.
The second half saw us get more on top of the game creating some chances at goal but not being clinical enough to convert our chances. The best chance of the game came on 89th minute of play when midfielder Jodi was fouled just outside the box. Fellow midfielder Steph W took the free kick aiming the ball towards the top left corner of the goal. The Amazon keeper made a finger tip save seeing the ball hit off the cross bar and bounce back towards the penalty spot. Midfielder Ellie raced in for the rebound seeing her effort hit the post and roll out for a goal kick.
A frustrating game against top of the league where a draw would have felt like a fairer result but football doesn’t always work like that. We wish the Amazons good luck in their efforts to win the league.
Player of the match today was awarded to Charlene who had a chance of position to full back and was brilliant for the entire game. She won almost every challenge she entered, distributed the ball with confidence and had a superb performance. Well done Char!
