We played Hebburn Town FC Women away from home in the quarter final of the league cup. We struggled for a squad due to the huge pile up of injuries within our team.
The game didn't start well for us seeing Hebburn take the lead after only 2 minutes of play. They netted a further two giving them a 3-0 goal lead by the 14th minute mark. The girls were clearly exhausted from the lack of subs for so many games now and seemed to constantly make the wrong decisions. The team began to find their feet again around the 35 minute mark seeing them attack at the Hebburn goal where they were awarded a corner ball. Midfielder Ellie whipped in a superb ball which headed above the keepers head and into the back of the net.
The halftime break came and Hebburn lead 3-1.
The second half started better for us, keeping a lot more posession and attacking at the Hebburn goal plenty. Around 5 minutes into the second half Hebburn broke from another ball over the top of our defence. Centre half Rachel aka Squeak raced in to challenge their striker. She entered the challenge winning the ball and sending it out for a corner but unfortunately due to the impact of the collision she fell to the floor dislocating her elbow very badly. Huge thank you to the Hebburn side line and club members who helped and were absolutely brilliant with this unfortunate incident.
Not long after Squeak left the field of play to go to hospital we netted our second goal of the game in the 55th minute where full back Sarah aka Fairy whipped in a quality ball into the box, this was tapped in at the back post by Charlene.
Hebburn broke on the 72nd minute to score their 4th and final goal of the game.
The remaining 11 on the pitch worked hard as a team to close the 2 goal lead currently held by our opposition. This came in the 85th minute seeing centre midfielder Jodi hit a fantastic volley from the edge of the box. The game ended 4-3 to Hebburn. We wish them the best of luck in the next round of the cup.
Player of the match today was awarded to Sarah aka Fairy for her brilliant hard work and effort for the entire 90 minutes. She was quite often left in an overload situation with the Hebburn attack and she dealt with this extremely well. She give her all during todays game and created a superb and much needed goal.
A poor performance collectively as a team, frustrating to watch as I know the girls are capable of so much more however, the last 3 games has saw 3 bad injuries resulting in the loss of another 3 big players, this on top of the other injuries within the team and the bad luck we always seem to have against us. The team are very bare right now, seeing centre mid Jodi finish the game with a knock but despite management telling her to come off she wouldn't leave her team with only 10. Now that is the sign of a great team. Roll on these last few games so the squad can recoup and come back stronger next season. Well done Girls.
