Rutherford travelled to Wear United Vedra for the return fixture from game week 1 where Rutherford ran out comfortable winners. However Wear United had found their feet since the first week and have registered some impressive wins and would be a far more difficult opponent now than they were then. Rutherford were looking to return to winning ways after defeat in the cup and started Sophie Hope at right back and Jacob Munday as an attacking midfielder with Max Johnson dropping into defensive midfielder. Elliott Vincent returned to the starting line up with Joe dropping to the bench.
The game started with both teams getting used to the pitch and each other before the first real chance and moment of quality arrive on 5 minutes. James Lee was passed the ball to left of centre, the defender broke out to knick the ball but James was too quick and produced a brilliant flick around the on rushing defender (think Dennis Bergkamp v Newcastle all those years ago!), one touch to clear his feet and then rifle the ball into the top corner. A brilliant goal.
Rutherford were really in the mood after that goal and 4 minutes later Max Billingham was on the score sheet with a typical Max Billingham goal, bursting passed a defender to smash the ball home from a James Lee assist. 2 nil and in control.
A few chances created after this by Rutherford, with Max and James both going close before a rare breakaway saw Wear find the net to make the scoreline 2-1 a serve as a reminder to Rutherford that they were in a game and not to take things lightly.
Rutherford continued to control large parts of the game and it was our subs which were starting to open Wear up, Aodan with a few chances before Joe scoring from inside the box from another James Lee assist, a net finish into the bottom corner. 3-1 at half time
Into the second half and James was to then turn into goalscorer after latching on to a brilliant long throw from Sophie Hope. James ran on to a bouncing ball, brought it under control and scored with a left footed strike. 4-1 and the game looked won. Looks can be deciving however and Wear are a better side than the scoreline suggested and scored shortly after to make the game 4-2.
This seemed to briefly wake Rutherford up who were starting to sleep walk towards the full time whistle and Joe scored his second of the game from inside the box, another neat finish, with his right foot this time. 5-2 and now the game was over, or so we thought.
A hand ball from Connor gave Wear a chance to get within two goals and they took the opportunity well and it was game at 5-3 on with 5 minutes left to go. This was a body blow for Connor who had been playing well to this point but he took the opportunity to redeem himself with some brilliant defending in the last 5 minutes as did all the team. Elliott clearing off the line from a corner and then Will a few moments later. Jack making good saves as Wear really went on the attack and eventually scoring with a long range effort into the top corner from their impressive number 10. 5-4 with 3 minutes left and as Sir Alex Ferguson would say "it was Sqeaky bum time!!".
However, Rutherford are made of sterner stuff now and managed to see the game out 5-4 winners and hit the milestone of 10 unbeaten which give where we've come from, getting a hammering in league 5 and some heavy defeats last season is a remarkable achievement and all credit should go to the players who have all really pulled together, trained well and improved massively.
Man of the match this week was Joe for his two goals and constant threat on either wing. Its easy to forget that Joe is playing a year up, so far this season he's scored 5 goals and is comfortable on either foot which makes him a really versatile member of the squad. Well done Joe.
A great win and one which made our Christmas party at Laser Tag all the more fun.
