Preseason game number 2. Performance not results

Preseason game number two, this time against Cleveland Hall Yellows. CHY finished 3rd in the league last season, only a few points behind us and they’ll be in our league next year so this game was a good indicator to what we might face next season and where we are in our preparation.

Rutherford started with the same IIX as previous game, we did this for two reason, one we knew CHY would be a tough test and we wanted to ease the new players and players returning from injury (Jacob) into the game.

The game started at a breakneck speed, both teams attacking with quick interplay, great individual skills and through balls. Rutherford were playing better than the previous preseason game, the work we did prior to the game helped and it was closer to the standard we know we can play at but it was still short of our best.

Rutherford took the lead through Elliott Vincent, pouncing on a ball in the 6 yard box following a corner form the right. CHY fit back and scored from inside the Rutherford box and could’ve took the lead a few minutes later when Connor handled the ball in the box. The foul was instinctive but shows the importance of not letting the ball bounce, no blame associated, we don’t fail in this team, only learn. Fortunately for Rutherford, CHY missed the spot kick and the game remained level.

Next on the scoresheet was Max Johnson making the game 2-1, a well taken goal and his 3rd so far this preseason. Just before half time, much like Saturday Rutherford conceded and went into the break at 2-2. The team talk at half time was to reduce the gaps between defence and midfield, and to pass the ball quicker.

The players tried to implement these instructions but it was difficult and CHY played well in the second half, scoring early to make it 3-2. Rutherford did equalise and stable the game through Amir’s wonder strike from fully 20 yards. The ball was cleared and it was 1 touch and strike, seeing the ball fly into the top corner, best goal of the night by far, only bettered by the look on Amir’s face when the ball hit the back of the net. I was stood with the CHY parents who all agreed it was a great goal and applauded in recognition.

The game looked like it would end in a draw until CHY broke away and scored in the final few minutes, making the final score line 4-3.
A far better performance but as I say, there’s improvements to be made which Shaun and I have already started planning for.

A couple of mentions; Taylor playing at centre back handled himself very well, made some good tackles including a last-ditch sliding tackle in the second half. We’ll continue to work with the centre backs to improve their knowledge and confidence. Max Billingham for his persistent running and leading the line in our attack. I know he didn’t get the goal he desperately wanted but he never stopped trying which shows an excellent attitude. Penny’s positive running and willingness to mix it physically with the boys. One of the standout moments of the game was sending the CHY fullback flying before playing a great ball into the box. I’m assured by Jon, the CHY manager that this has never happened before! Max Johnson’s skill and goals are a real positive this preseason and something we want to see continue. Aodan making some great saves, dominating his area and distribution was impressive but the standout moment and Man of Match goes to Amir for his brilliant goal and celebration with the team. Well done Amir, you’re doing very well since joining the team. We know it’s not easy but you’re doing very well.

See you on Saturday for training.
