On a sunny and warm autumn afternoon Rutherford were back at Beggerswood Park for the first time since the opening weekend of the season
The match kicked off and within 5 minutes a moment of brilliance as James opened the scoring. A great piece of individual skill left defenders in his wake before he drilled a low shot into the bottom corner, setting the tone for the match, there was a hint of controversy abut the goal as Hilda Park felt the ball had crossed the byline for a goal kick but it was a very tight call and fortunately for us it went our way. The early pressure continued, and soon after, Michael doubled the lead. Max Johnson, showing great awareness, squared the ball across the box, allowing Michael to tap in comfortably.
Despite the fast start and dominance by Rutherford, Hilda were not out of it and continued to play football. Their preserverance paid off and they were on the scoresheet with a goal from a well-taken corner. 2-1 at the break.
The second half saw a few changes, Joe, Joseph, Fin and Jacob all on and it was Joe who got on the scoresheet next, capitalising on the relentless work from the forwards to fire a low strike from inside the box. It wasn’t long before Michael added a second, this time with a stunning long-range effort that flew into the top corner, leaving the opposition keeper with no chance. The two quick Rutherford goals really knocked the stuffing out of Hilda Park and there was only ever one winner from this point onwards
James then added his second of the game, smashing the ball into the top corner after a clever setup from Max Billingham. Hilda got a goal back shortly via curling in a free kick that caught the Rutherford napping at the near post, bringing the score to 5-2.
James wasted no time in restoring the five-goal cushion. Straight from the restart, he took the ball from the centre circle, weaved past defenders, and lashed it into the top corner in another moment of individual brilliance completing his hat trick. 6-2
As the game entered its final stages, James grabbed his forth of the game after Sam played an inch-perfect through ball, and James calmly slotted it past the keeper, capping off a dominant performance and a comprehensive 7-2 victory.
It was a fantastic team effort, with James’ four-goal haul standing out alongside notable contributions from Michael scoring two on his return to the team, Max Billingham and Max Johnson who assisted two goal. The team will hopefully take plenty of confidence from this performance as they really put the work into their passing today in particular simple, short passes they way they were facing. It's very easy to say/write but playing this way takes discipline, trust and confidence in both your own ability and that of your team mates. In this game we completed 11 3-5 passing strings and our longest passing string was 5 and 142 passes overall. Compare this to our previous two recordings and its significant increase. Well done everyone, excellent work
