The game began at a frantic pace, and Rutherford didn’t take long to assert themselves. On 13 minutes, Harry slipped a perfectly timed assist to Jake, who made no mistake, finishing coolly into the bottom corner. The lead was deserved, but the game would prove far from straightforward.

Just six minutes later, however, the momentum shifted slightly as Rutherford were caught out by a scrappy rebound. The ball fell kindly for the Fellside attacker, and with a flash of the boot, the game was back on level terms at 1-1.

But even with that setback, Rutherford remained the more fluid side. The midfield buzzed with energy, Harry and Max Johnson were relentless in their pressing, while Max Billingham was a constant threat down the right flank, linking up with the forwards and driving the team forward with pace.

The second half began with Rutherford’s determination firmly on display. Within minutes of the restart, James Lee, a game changer today, made his mark. In what could only be described as a moment of composure under pressure, receiving the ball with his back to goal just outside the box, took a touch, and calmly slotted it past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. The sidelines roared, and Rutherford had their noses in front once again.

And just 10 minutes later, Joseph Fenton sealed what was an exquisite team move. Max J’s pinpoint assist found Joseph in space, and he made no mistake, finishing with aplomb to extend the lead to 3-1. The Rutherford players were in control, playing some sublime football.

However, the last 15 minutes were anything but plain sailing. A corner for Fellside saw a mix-up in the box, and their players bundled in a scrappy goal. The momentarily chaotic scene in the box was dubbed by Rutherford players as a "conger line" but Fellside's effort was enough to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

The tension mounted, but Rutherford held firm. There were flashes of brilliance in the closing stages, but Jacob Bell, our Player of the Match, was the hero at the back, calmly cutting out attack after attack. The defensive line, which started with a back 4, was resolute. It was a solid performance across the board, but Jacob’s tackles, composure, and leadership made him the standout performer of the day.

Despite the reduced size of the pitch and the smaller transition goals, Rutherford were by far the better side on the day. They outran, outfought and outplayed their opponents. The Fellside team, with their towering 6ft goalkeeper and passionate players, were certainly no pushovers, but Rutherford’s intensity and team spirit shone through from start to finish.

Max Billingham was a menace down the right, putting in one of his most dynamic performances yet. Mason Porter is finally beginning to use his size and strength. His beastly midfield display today was punctuated by a stunning Maradona turn that left three players in his wake, a moment that had the crowd buzzing.

As for Harry and Max Johnson, the pair were everywhere, nipping at the ball, hustling the opposition, and setting the tempo for the team. Their constant energy was a key to Rutherford’s success.

Every single player who starter and came on today tried their absolute hearts out today but a special mention goes to the man of the match, Jacob Bell. He was a rock at the back and didn’t seem to lose a single tackle. His composure under pressure was remarkable, and it’s no surprise he’s been dubbed the “animal” of the match by his teammates and the opposition coach. Well played, Jacob, on your Div 5 debut!

A huge shoutout to Scott Billingham for providing the new subs bench, ensuring the squad could stay fresh throughout the game, even with seven players on the sidelines. It’s a headache for the coach next week when it comes to team selection, but it’s a good problem to have after such a comprehensive squad performance.

In a tight match, Rutherford’s superb teamwork and determination saw them deservedly take all three points. Their leap into Division 5 looks set to be an exciting one!
