Rutherford produced a gutsy performance to secure a hard-fought 3-3 draw against a very big, physical, and direct Deerness Valley Storm side. Deerness, last season’s Division 7 champions and clear favourites to do well again this year, twice took the lead, but Rutherford responded each time to snatch a point.
From the outset, Deerness imposed their physicality, winning first and second balls and playing a direct game. Rutherford showed commendable resilience, particularly in aerial duels and defensive work, standing up to the physical demands of the match. The second half saw the Rutherford goal under sustained pressure, but the team continued to battle hard.
The game itself was limited in quality, with VEO statistics showing the ball out of possession for 52 minutes of the 70. Rutherford slightly edged Deerness in completed passes, but in terms of attempts on goal, the visitors dominated with 22 shots to Rutherford’s 4. It was in this area — shot-stopping and defensive leadership — that star performances shone through.
Sam - led the backline with authority, winning headers, making crucial tackles and blocks, and organising his teammates.
Taylor - improved noticeably, focusing on his distance control and maintaining close attention to the opposition forward.
The fullbacks — Elliott, Connor, Callum, and Harry (who opened his goalscoring account) — all contributed significantly both defensively and offensively.
Jake worked tirelessly, occupying two Deerness defenders and scoring a brilliant 25-yard goal.
Michael produced a moment of magic when it mattered most, scoring a stunning left-footed volley from distance.
Ethan takes this week’s Player of the Match for his exceptional performance in goal, making multiple vital saves, clearing danger, catching crosses, and distributing effectively.
Overall, this was a great battling performance, demonstrating courage, grit, and team spirit. Once Rutherford combines this defensive resilience with their passing game, there is every reason to believe the team’s true potential will shine through in the coming matches.
