Rutherford AFC travelled to South Shields Foundation Youth and came away with a 1–1 draw that felt like a big step forward after a difficult run. The pitch was heavy and bobbly, but the group handled it well and put in a strong display.

Kicking down the slope in the first half, Rutherford were on top from the first whistle. Most of the chances came from wide areas, with Harry Andrews and Max Billingham supplying crosses and cut backs. Michael Burns was on the end of several of them, dragging one effort just wide, then taking another down neatly but unable to keep his volley under the bar under pressure from a defender. Set pieces caused problems as well, with Jacob Bell, Sam Dixon and Michael all close to scoring from excellent deliveries from Harry and Max.

The moment of the match, and probably the season so far, came from Michael. A tackle in midfield broke kindly and he stepped onto the loose ball just inside his own half, spotting the keeper off his line and lifting an unbelievable strike over him and into the net. Those who saw training on Wednesday know it wasn’t a fluke. Rutherford went into the break 1–0 up, although it could easily have been more.

The second half was always going to be harder uphill and into the wind. South Shields equalised early and had more of the ball, but Rutherford didn’t panic. The shape and concentration stayed strong and the team worked hard for each other, keeping Shields away from dangerous areas. Ethan only had one real save to make, and although there were nervy moments, the squad managed the pressure well.

Rutherford nearly grabbed a winner late on after a tidy passing move sent Jake through. His strike from distance rolled just wide of the far post. A draw was probably fair overall, but the improvement in performance was clear and the attitude from everyone was excellent.

Man of the Match goes to Michael Burns for a standout display in midfield. He won his battles, used the ball calmly, covered a huge amount of ground and topped it all off with a brilliant goal.
