We faced Hetton again this weekend after playing them last week, looking to build on a few key areas from that match. We wanted to be more physical and stronger through the middle of the pitch, so we made some changes in personnel to help with that. Jacob Bell came into midfield alongside Mason, who did well in the previous game. With two strong defenders behind them, the aim was to keep better control of the central areas.
That approach worked well for the first 20 minutes. We looked organised and competitive early on. Max, returning after an absence, scored a well-taken free kick, with Jake finishing at the back post to give us a good start.
Hetton responded well and showed why they deserved the result. Their number 16 was very effective, scoring from distance, and their number 9 added two more before halftime. Both were difficult to handle, and we found it hard to keep them quiet.
At halftime we made some tactical adjustments. Jacob Bell was asked to man-mark number 16, while Sam tracked number 9. The plan was for both to stay close and make things uncomfortable for Hetton’s key players.
Despite the changes, Hetton’s third goal came from a cross we failed to clear quickly enough, and their player finished unopposed in the middle. We did, however, play some of our best football of the game after that, putting together several good passing moves and showing more composure when playing out from the back. Unfortunately, we struggled to turn those moments into clear chances. Hetton’s centre-back was excellent—strong, quick, and difficult to get past.
Hetton added two more goals: one a well-struck effort from distance, and the fifth coming from a corner where we didn’t clear our lines or close down the shot fast enough.
Across both games against Hetton, they’ve had the edge in structure and solidity. They were deserved winners here—compact, disciplined, and effective.
Player of the match today was Elliott who played well after struggling last week. He battled well, supported attacks and show great determination. Mentions for Sam, Michael and Amir from the Hetton manager who was complimentary on our effort, attitude and style of play.
