Match Report: NESA 1–4 Rutherford AFC
A dominant final‑day performance to close the season
Rutherford ended their season in style with an excellent 4–1 win away at NESA, a result made even sweeter after the heavy defeat earlier in the campaign. Playing up the slope and into a strong wind in the first half, the conditions forced Rutherford to play in a controlled, intelligent manner and it suited them perfectly.
While NESA went long at every opportunity, Rutherford built calmly from the back, playing short, combining through midfield and showing real bravery in possession. The back three were superb throughout, dealing with NESA’s direct play by winning first contact, refusing to let the ball bounce and using Ethan’s high starting position to sweep up anything that broke through.
Rutherford dominated the ball and created four excellent chances before the deadlock was broken — one effort skimmed the bar, another clipped the woodwork, and two more were inches away. Against the run of play, NESA took the lead with a break down the right and a tidy cut‑back finish. It was harsh, but the response was immediate.
Two minutes later, Max Johnson continued his fine form, finishing confidently to level the score. Seven minutes after that, Michael put Rutherford ahead with a composed strike, and four minutes later he added his second to send Rutherford into the break 3–1 up.
The half‑time message was simple: stay patient, keep building, don’t go long. The players delivered exactly that. The second half was total control. Rutherford moved the ball superbly, dominated territory and created chance after chance. On 43 minutes, Jake followed in a saved effort from Michael to make it 4–1.
From there, Rutherford were relentless. They had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside, hit the bar again, missed an open goal and created enough chances to reach double figures. The scoreline flattered NESA.
In possession, Rutherford were outstanding — calm, connected and creative. Out of possession, the midfield blocked passing lanes superbly, the back three won their duels, and the pressing in the final third was relentless. It was a complete performance.
This result means Rutherford finish the season unbeaten in their final three games, with two wins and a draw. Looking back, they could easily have collected another 12–15 points across the year, but the progress in the final weeks shows exactly what this group is capable of.
